India has urged Bangladesh to expedite the verification of nationality for more than 2,862 pending cases of alleged illegal immigrants, saying repatriation cannot move forward smoothly without faster cooperation. Bangladesh, however, has warned it will take “appropriate action” against any forced “push-in” of people from India. The issue has gained political attention following remarks by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, adding sensitivity to an already complex border situation. Alongside this, both countries continue discussions on broader issues such as Teesta river water sharing and other bilateral mechanisms.
